Orioles probable pitchers & starting lineups vs. Minnesota Twins, September 28

With the AL Wild Card field set following Friday night’s games, the Orioles have nothing left to play for over the season’s final two days. They’ll wrap up their season with two more matchups against the Twins but seeing as they’re locked into the 4 seed and will host either the Tigers or Royals, Brandon Hyde and company will likely be on cruise control.

Likewise, Minnesota’s season is over after a dreadful September collapse knocked them out of the Wild Card race. They’ll head home after Sunday’s game and will have to reflect deeply about how and why the team was unable to hold onto a playoff spot, and what they’ll do to rectify their issues over the winter.

Probable starting pitchers

  • The Orioles will send right hander Matt Bowman to the mound in what will amount to a bullpen game. Overall, Bowman’s 2024 has been unspectacular. He’s spent time in four different organizations, including the last two months with the Orioles. He’s been surprisingly effective in Baltimore, pitching to a 3.77 ERA, albeit with an inflated 4.56 FIP. Bowman will most likely be on the Orioles postseason pitching staff, barring an unforeseen catastrophic collapse over the next two days.
  • Opposite Bowman will be Twins right hander Zebby Matthews. The 24 year old has had a forgettable debut with the Twins, pitching 34.2 innings across 8 starts with a 5.71 ERA and a 5.21 FIP. Twins’ manager Rocco Baldelli likely won’t lean too hard on Matthews, whose 102 combined innings between Minnesota and his stops in the minors are well past his career high. Expect to see heavy bullpen usage on both sides in tonight’s game.
