Odds, expert Week 2 NFL picks

Staff report

Our NFL betting expert brings you his best Dolphins vs. Ravens predictions and picks for their Week 2 showdown, which is live Sunday on CBS at 1 p.m. ET.

Lamar Jackson has the look of his former NFL MVP self and tossed three touchdown passes to lead the Ravens to a 24-9 victory over the New York Jets in the season opener last Sunday. Jackson will face a tougher foe in the Dolphins, who benefited from a strong defensive effort en route to posting a 20-7 win over the New England Patriots last Sunday.

Dolphins vs. Ravens picks and analysis

Jackson knows all too well what the Dolphins will do, recalling Miami’s blitz-heavy scheme under defensive coordinator Josh Boyer gave Baltimore fits in a 22-10 victory over the Ravens last November. Jackson was sacked four times while rushing for “only” 39 yards on nine carries in that game. The elusive Jackson will look for a better showing with his feet on Sunday.

Lamar Jackson player prop pick

While Jackson is betting on himself with the hopes that a big season translates to an even bigger payday, it’s a smart wager that he makes a pair of trips to the end zone.
Jackson’s rushing ability is aided by viable threats in the passing game. After all, tight end Mark Andrews had a team-leading five catches last week and has totaled at least six receptions and a touchdown in each of his previous two meetings with Miami.

Devin Duvernay reeled in a career-high two touchdown passes and Rashod Bateman found the end zone last week. Bateman had six catches for 80 yards in his last encounter with the Dolphins.

With possibly more focus on the pass catchers than before, Jackson may have more to work with in the middle of the field.

Our Pick: Lamar Jackson to score two or more touchdowns @ +750

Dolphins vs. Ravens pick against the spread

J.K. Dobbins was a full participant in practice on Wednesday and is trending toward making his season debut this weekend. Dobbins missed all of last season with a knee injury after rushing for nine touchdowns as a rookie in 2020.

While that’s promising, the Ravens are dealing with questions along the offensive line after left tackle Ja’Wuan James sustained a season-ending Achilles injury last week. Versatile Pat Mekari manned the position in his absence, and likely will need to hold the fort until All-Pro Ronnie Stanley can return from an ankle injury he initially sustained in 2020.

Baltimore may not be able to cover the spread, but it should have just enough to topple Miami on Sunday.

Our Pick: Ravens moneyline @ -195
