Steelers vs. Patriots picks and analysis

Tom Brady and Ben Roethlisberger would bask in the spotlight when New England clashed with the Steelers, but now, two new quarterbacks are tasked with carrying on a rivalry that’s been dormant since 2019.

Mitch Trubisky will look to improve Pittsburgh’s 1-7 record against the Patriots that dates back to 2013, while Mac Jones attempts to pick up where Brady left off and leave the Steel City with a win.

Steelers +2.5 (FanDuel)

New England’s track record against the Steelers is likely one of the main reasons it’s the favorite heading into Sunday, but if there’s a time for Pittsburgh to shift momentum, it’s right now.

The Steelers’ defense intercepted Joe Burrow four times last week, and now gets the opportunity to intimidate another young quarterback in Mac Jones, who likely won’t even be 100 percent due to back spasms.

On top of that, Pittsburgh played turnover-free football in Week 1 and escaped with a win despite getting only 23 rushing yards from its star running back Najee Harris.

With the Steelers’ spread at just +2.0 (-110), there’s not a lot of room for them to cover if they are on the losing end. So, neglect the points and seek the higher payout by banking on the team that’s in the better position to win.

Our Pick: Steelers to win moneyline @ +105 with Caesars Sportsbook

Pick: First-half ‘Over’ 20 points +100 (Caesars)

After the Patriots were held scoreless through the first 30 minutes of action against Miami, it might seem like New England is bound to not pull its weight for this pick.

But taking a look at the bigger picture, that first-half performance was an anomaly.

In the Patriots’ last 15 games, they’ve combined with their opponent to score at least 20 points on 11 occasions. Prior to last week’s game against the Dolphins, New England hit the 20-point threshold in the first half in 78.6 percent of its previous 14 games.

The Steelers scored 17 points by themselves in their opening contest, so this bet has all the makings of a winner as long as the Patriots can overcome their first-half woes.

Our Pick: Over 20.0 points in the first half @ +100 at Caesar’s Sportsbook

Betting on the NFL?

Pat Freiermuth ‘Over’ 3.5 receptions (Caesars)

Tight end Pat Freiermuth seems to have quickly established chemistry with Mitch Trubisky, as he hauled in five catches for 75 yards to open the season.

Freiermuth received 27 percent (10) of Pittsburgh’s 37 targets, and Tyler Higbee was the only tight end in the league to get more looks last Sunday.

Now in his second season, Freiermuth has tallied at least four receptions in 11 of his 17 games in the NFL. Look for that trend to continue against New England, as the Steelers are more apt to lean on the passing game while Najee Harris nurses a foot injury.

The Pick: Pat Freiermuth to record over 3.5 receptions @ -174 @ Caesar’s Sportsbook
