Houston has nearly punched its ticket to the postseason as the magic number is now one to clinch a playoff berth. It will be the sixth straight season that the Astros will play meaningful October baseball.

McCullers delivered a performance worthy of locking up a spot in Houston’s playoff starting rotation, as he allowed just two runs on two hits and four walks in six innings. The right-hander kept A’s hitters guessing as he generated 16 whiffs (swings and misses) and his strikeout total was the most since July 29, 2018.

Houston’s offense matched the performance of its starting pitcher, using a three-run seventh inning (fueled by Aledmys Díaz’s go-ahead two-run shot and Kyle Tucker’s RBI single). Yordan Alvarez and Christian Vázquez logged early RBI doubles.

The Astros sit at 94-50 and their magic number to clinch the American League West title for the fifth time in the past six seasons is seven.
